  1. Your memoir was so awesome! I loved how you were able to show your hero's journey in such a short period of time and in a short story! You showed your road away from your culture through the dislike of dumpling, then being called back home when your friends needed help with something you associated to the culture you were trying to distance yourself from. I also like how it was the outside influence of your friends who weren't a part of your home culture and didn't know your feelings towards dumplings and what they symbolized that brought you back to your home culture. I think that shows how close the relationship with your friend is since you were willing to do something that didn't interest you in order to help them. During the fish bowl discussion, I liked your view on identity and how its shaped by past experiences as well as future desires. You reflected this in your memoir well by explaining how it was your mom's job to teach you how to make dumplings, and now it was your job to teach your friend because you were taught that you should share your abilities and teach others.

  2. Hey Grace!
Great job on your presentation. The dumplings were awesome and I will definitely try to get my mom to help me make them. I loved how you showed your mother and your friend in your presentation. Not only did that represent the relationships between you but it also really represented the Chinese and american culture which you experience in your life. In addition, I really enjoyed how you said you only eat the outside of the shell and not the inside. That really reinforced how you feel as you are split between two cultures. Also, great job during the fishbowl conversation. I read the Rupenzal poem as well and enjoyed you talking about her hair and how when it was cut off it showed the lack of innocence and how you compared that to Janie and her hair portrayed her freedom.

  3. Hi Grace! I really liked your memoir, as Chinese American myself, it really struck a cord. I think you did a great job during the discussion, you had a strong presence and helped lead the discussion. I liked how you referenced the poems and synthesized from several sources about identity. The part about how hair could mean different things was an interesting idea. Citing "Medusa" and "Rapunzel" in the discussion added a new layer of complexity on what symbols can mean. Though at times I feel you may have started to drift too far from Their Eyes Were Watching God. But overall, I think you did a very good job in the discussion and helped contribute to the class’s complex understanding of Their Eyes Were Watching God.

  4. Hi Grace! I really enjoyed your food memoir! I thought it was a great idea to include your mother helping you make them since she was the one who kind of introduced you previously as you discussed at the beginning of your memoir. I thought your dumplings were amazing and I really liked how you included your friend in the video since that was a big part of your memoir. During the Fishbowl Discussion, I found the point you brought up about comparing Rapunzel's hair to Janie's was very interesting. I liked how you used Rapunzel as a basis for comparison how her long hair getting cut off represented loss of innocence, while Janie's long hair represented her sexuality. Overall, I think you did an awesome job with your food memoir as well as adding strong points of discussion!

  5. You did a great job throughout the presentations I particularly loved your food memoir and how you compared your Chinese and American cultures and the differences you have noticed as time progressed. Your story reminds me a little bit of my home and the differences in my sisters and I are much like the differences within your mother and yourself. The way you included your friend in your video was really nice because it really reinforced the story you were wanting to get across to us. Having many traditions in a home can be difficult in finding your identity but I think you have done an amazing job blending the two cultures into your own. Though you wanted to distance yourself from your Chinese culture you embraced it when your friends began to need help. I think that it shows how deep peoples roots really are. Great job!
